The twin cities of Napier and Hastings are located in the sunny, coastal Hawke’s Bay Region of the North Island.

Napier (58,000) and Hastings (71,000) are a mere 20 km apart. The cities are famous for their Art Deco architecture originating from the rebuilding of the city centres in the 1930s, following a major earthquake in 1931.

The area surrounding Hastings City is the fruit bowl of New Zealand, known for the production of apples and stone fruit, grapes and wine. Further inland sheep and cattle farming are dominant, with some sheep farms carrying 20,000- 25,000 sheep.

Useful information

The region has one of the best climates in New Zealand, with January day time temperatures averaging 26°C and winter days often reaching 16-18°C. Overnight winter temperatures can be near zero. Summer days in the low to mid 30s are common. Rainfall is considerably lower than on the North Island west coast.

Napier is served by a domestic airport and a busy port for ships. Exports from the area include farm products, fruit, timber and wine.
