Auckland Grammar School is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious schools, for both academic and sporting achievement.

Auckland Grammar School is one of New Zealand’s most prestigious schools, in terms of both academic achievement and sporting success. It’s located just minutes from the Auckland CBD. The school is unique in that it is a state school which is consistently at the top of the academic league tables, has over 400 sports teams representing the School each year, has marvelous performance music groups and performing arts productions and a national and international profile.

Over the years the School has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars (to Oxford University, UK), 14 Girdlers Scholars (to Cambridge University, UK), 2 Robertson Scholars (to Duke University, USA), 7 Fellows of the Royal Society of London (the largest number of any school outside UK), 1 Fields Medal winner.

Facilities

World-class facilities at the school include a 400 seat performing arts theatre; 2500 seat assembly hall; gymnasium and new indoor sports centre; 6 artificial turf tennis courts; 3 separate sports pavilions; heated swimming pool;  weights room; new technology block and IT laboratories;  well-resourced music suite and library; outdoor education centre in the central North Island  offering bush walking, skiing, canoeing, rock climbing and tramping.

Curriculum

Auckland Grammar School is a boys-only state secondary school. It teaches from years 9 to 13. and offers a dual qualification pathway to both the New Zealand National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and the University of Cambridge International Exams (CIE).

Subjects offered include accounting, biology, business studies, chemistry, classical studies, economics, English, French, geography, graphics, history, history of art, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, maths (calculus and statistics), music, physics, practical art, physical education, design and technology.

Homestay & pastoral support

Homestay accommodation is provided with selected New Zealand families and monitored by the International Student Manager. Deans oversee each year level, Guidance Counsellors deal with any significant personal issues and the Careers Department staff assist with placement in tertiary institutions.

Extra-curricular programmes

The school owns a four-hectare outdoor education facility in the central North Island, with activities including tramping, caving, climbing, rafting and a rope course.

The school offers a range of involvement in cultural activities including Maori and Pacific Island cultural groups, school productions, numerous music performance groups, debating, chess, drama, tramping club, Tae Kwon Do and public speaking. Regular social activities are held throughout each term with Epsom Girls Grammar School, as well as the annual drama and cultural performances.

Sports available include adventure race, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross country, cycling, fencing, football, golf, hockey, kayaking, lawn bowls, lacrosse, mountain biking, multisport, orienteering, rock climbing, rowing, rugby, skiing, snow boarding, softball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, water polo, weight lifting, yachting.

Exceptional National Examination Success
  • Regularly ranked in the top 5 schools in the elite New Zealand Scholarship examination
  • 100% pass rate in International Cambridge A-level exams since our students started entering these exams in 2004
  • Consistently had University Entrance pass rates over 90% during the past 17 years
  • Majority of entrants ranked in the top 1% in other international examinations (e.g. American Classical League and Australian Mathematics, Science and English)

Videos

Last year we released our first cookbook, featuring over 150 delicious recipes from the Grammar community, including one from internationally renowned chef and Auckland Grammar Old Boy Anthony Hoy Fong ’91. Anthony curated the cookbook and recently joined us in the kitchen to make some delicious.
