Awatapu College is a co-educational high school with approximately 650 students aged between 13-19 years. It is recognised as one of the leading schools for International Students. Both short term and long term students are accepted at this high school.

The grounds are spacious with modern well planned buildings and specialised facilities which include an excellent library, sports gymnasium, science laboratories and computer suites. Along with regular academic subjects, Awatapu College excels in visual arts, performing arts, engineering and technology. There is a purpose built International Suite for pastoral, English language and academic support.

Academic

A wide range of academic and vocational subjects is offered. All subjects are registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The English Language Department provides language and academic support to International Students through:

• Intensive English classes
• Subject support classes
• In-class support in the mainstream classes

In addition, the students are also prepared to meet the requirements for New Zealand university entrance literacy and International English exams when required. The unique academic support features are:

• Subject support classes where students are tutored on the content material taught in the mainstream classes
• The use of teacher aides to support and monitor student progress in mainstream classes focusing on the in-class work and homework completion

Culture, Music and Sport

All International Students are encouraged to participate in the following sporting or cultural activities:

• Festival of Cultures
• International Languages Week
• Visual and Performing Arts events
• School concerts and performances
• Wide range of sports
• Annual ski trips, camps, outdoor education activities and field trips to Tongariro, Waiouru, Wellington and other places
