Tawa College

Tawa College is a co-educational high school of 1420 students, based in Wellington.

It is very much a college of the local community, though it is only 15 minutes by train from the centre of Wellington. Students at the college excel academically, in sport and in cultural activities.

Extra-curricular activities

Tawa College has a proud tradition of success in music. Our Dawn Chorus and specialist choirs perform well both nationally and internationally. The college is also well-known for its sporting achievements. A wide range of sports is offered, including football, rugby, hockey, squash, badminton, dragon boating, netball and cricket.

Facilities

Tawa College is proud of its well-equipped classrooms, modern Music Suite, Information Centre and Recreation Centre with two gymnasiums. The extensive grounds include sports fields and an artificial turf.

Academic support

The International Dean monitors students’ progress. English language programmes are offered to develop English skills if required. As the college has a relatively small number of International Students they mix readily with New Zealand students. This informal contact has a positive impact on language development.

Homestay and pastoral support

Excellent pastoral support is provided by the International Dean and Homestay Co-ordinator. Students live with carefully selected homestay families, who provide the opportunity to experience New Zealand culture first-hand.

Location

Tawa College is surrounded by the local Tawa community. It is situated about 9 kilometres from Titahi Bay, where surfing is a popular activity, and 16 kilometres from Wellington City and its beautiful harbour.

School Achievements

Tawa College students consistently achieve Excellence and Merit endorsements in NCEA courses at a rate above the national average. Two senior students were recently awarded Royal Society scholarships to attend the USA Space Camp in Alabama. One student came first in the New Zealand ICAS Writing competition. In Music our students belong to the National Secondary Schools Choir and the National Secondary Schools Brass Band. In sport, our rowers won a gold medal at the Maadi Cup Rowing Competition and our boys’ and girls’ football teams competed in the New Zealand Premier Collegiate Tournament.
