University of Canterbury (UC)

UC has an international reputation for academic excellence in both teaching and research.

Location: Christchurch

Currently there are over 2,000 international students from over 60 countries enrolled in a wide variety of programmes out of a total student population of 16,000.

The University is situated in a spacious landscaped campus in the suburb of Ilam, Christchurch. Known as the ‘Garden City’, Christchurch has beautiful parks and beaches as well as great shopping and a strong cultural scene.

The University also has five field stations throughout the South Island, serving as field-trip bases and research centres for staff and students.

Postgraduate courses range from one-year graduate and post-graduate diplomas, to Masters degrees based on a combination of course work and research, and purely research-based doctorates

Academic Year

The academic year begins in mid February and ends in mid November, with two semesters: February to June and July to November.

English Language and Foundation Studies

The University’s preparatory programmes provide ideal preparation for study at undergraduate or postgraduate degree level. All of our courses are designed to provide students with the specific language and study skills needed to succeed in academic study.

Student Services

Our student advisors provide caring and friendly support to all international students on campus.

Other services include an orientation programme, a mentoring programme, assistance with English language, writing and study skills, assistance with accommodation and on campus medical facilities.

Accommodation

There are six halls of residence within a few minutes’ walk of the University. Home stays (private board with a NZ family) can also be arranged.
