New Plymouth – Taranaki

Home » Study in NZ » New Zealand Cities » New Plymouth – Taranaki

New Plymouth is the provincial capital of Taranaki province. The city has a population of 51,000.

It is a beautiful city, set on the coast of northern Taranaki and on the northern side of Mount Taranaki. This 2400m extinct volcano is a beautiful sight on a fine day.

The city was established with migrants from the southwest of England in 1841, just a year after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which established New Zealand as a British Colony.

Useful information

New Plymouth is now a thriving provincial centre, supported by a very prosperous dairy industry, and is the base for the New Zealand oil, gas and petro-chemical industry. Oil and gas are produced from on-shore and off-shore wells in the region.

Taranaki is one of the most productive dairy farming regions in New Zealand. Products are exported through the Port of New Plymouth. The city is also serviced by a domestic airport.

Summer daytime temperatures average 20-22°C while winter day maximums average 14°C in July.
