New Horizon College of English was started in 1989 to give students the opportunity to get to know the real New Zealand outside the main cities. They can experience the beauty, tranquillity and genuine friendliness of New Zealand people and improve their English language with more chances to have contact with New Zealanders.
The school is small and friendly with student numbers between 40 and 75 depending on the season. The average class size is only 8 students with a maximum of 12, so everyone is treated as an individual and the staff have time to chat and answer questions. A wide range of nationalities is always present so students can make friends from all over the world.
We have created a unique family atmosphere by organising a wide range of activities after school and at weekends. An English-only policy in the school building also ensures everyone is included from their first day.
The school is located in the centre of the city, one block from the sea. The library and bus stop are across the street. The school has 9 classrooms and a huge student activity room as well as a self-study centre and computer room.
New Horizon College of English is a member of ENGLISH NEW ZEALAND and accredited by NZQA.
All staff are highly qualified professionals able to give excellent support and advice to students wanting to go on to further education in New Zealand. 15-minute 1-to-1 lessons after school are available free of charge. The Self-Study Centre is open every day from 3pm to 5pm. The public library is across the street.
We place students with carefully selected homestays, based on the information given on the application form. Living with a local family gives students a great opportunity to improve their conversational skills. Students are provided with their own room, shared facilities, breakfast and dinner on school days and 3 meals a day at weekends.
There are no limits on General English. Students must have a minimum band score of 4.5 in practice General IELTS to join IELTS preparation.
