The climate is temperate with summer temperatures from 18-25°C (November to April) and winter temperatures 4-14°C (June to September).

Wanganui is a quiet provincial centre resting between the sea and the Whanganui National Park. Its early importance has left the city the legacy of a strong Maori cultural identity, elegant colonial buildings and a long tradition as an educational centre. The city is home to six secondary schools as well as Wanganui UCOL where a degree level Fine Arts programme is offered.

UCOL’s Computer Graphic Design degree programme is based here. The programme has an international reputation with a number of UCOL’s computer animation graduates being employed in the production of “The Lord of the Rings” and “King Kong”. “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy gained a record 11 Oscars, including Oscars for Special Effects.
