Wellington is the second most populous urban area of New Zealand (population 397,900). It is a three hour flight from eastern Australia and around a ten hour flight from most places on the Pacific Rim.
Wellington is consistently voted New Zealand’s most liveable city. Wellington’s amphitheatre of harbour and hills dictates its compact form. Nearly everything is within easy walking distance.

Wellington is at the southwestern tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range. It is the major population centre of the southern North Island, and is the administrative centre of the Wellington Region, which also includes the Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. Wellington is the world’s southernmost capital city of a country.
The Wellington region is a collection of five cities and districts (Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Kapiti). It offers a wide variety of landscapes – from bays and beaches to rolling hinterland – and a matching number of work and lifestyle options. Approximately 180,000 people live in Wellington City; 400,000 in the five cities that collectively make up greater Wellington.
Wellington enjoys a mild climate (if at times a bit breezy) with over 2000 hours of sunshine a year and an average daily summer maximum temperature of 22°C. It enjoys more sunshine hours than Auckland, Melbourne and London and less rain than Auckland and Sydney.
Wellingtonians are outward looking, and are the most educated (and highly paid) in New Zealand. Wellington is a multicultural and international city. More than 20 percent of residents are bilingual and some 25 percent were born outside the country.
Wellington has a full range of education facilities including three world ranked universities and three highly regarded Institutes of Technology/Polytechnics. It is the destination of choice for smart, ambitious and imaginative students from all over the world.
